Sales agreements in South America and Scandinavia

In-depth advice helps beverage manufacturers

The LANXESS beverage stabilizer Velcorin® protects alcohol-free refreshments very effectively against damaging micro-organisms, without affecting the taste, aroma or color of the drink.

Leverkusen – LANXESS has concluded sales agreements for Velcorin® in South America and Scandinavia. Döhler América Latina Ltda in Limeira, Brazil, will take over sales activities and technical support for the LANXESS beverage stabilizer in South America with immediate effect. In South America, Velcorin®, which has recently also been licensed in Mercosur (Mercado Común del Sur), will be sold in Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia in particular.

The Döhler Group is one of the leading suppliers of raw materials and flavorings for the beverage industry in the Latin American region. For Ingo Broda, head of Beverage Technologies in the Material Protection Products business unit at LANXESS, the signing of the agreement marks a further milestone in the rigorous implementation of the Velcorin® marketing strategy: "With our successful registration in Mercosur, the whole South America region is now accessible. Considering the way demand and business is developing, we can see good opportunities for growth in this region. With its extensive expertise and resources Döhler is an ideal sales partner to support us in the fields of marketing and customer care.

Martin Tolksdorf, Managing Director of Döhler América Latina, says: “The collaboration with LANXESS represents an ideal addition in our range of services for the beverage industry. We can use our collective experience and help beverage manufacturers to access innovative products and concepts which they have been unable to consider up to now using conventional stabilization methods.

At the same time, a sales agreement for Velcorin® was signed for Scandinavia with the company R&M E.M.S. GmbH Engineering Maintenance Services in Cloppenburg. The subsidiary company of Reinhold & Mahla AG includes among its customers companies from the chemical industry, as well as from the food and beverage industry. “That was the last piece of the puzzle. Now, in addition to South America, the continent of Europe is also covered completely with a service network for Velcorin®. And as our stabilizer is now produced on two sites, we can ensure that the demand of both our regular customers and potential new customers can be covered on a worldwide basis, in line with our expectations,” remarks Broda.

Velcorin
® protects alcohol-free refreshments and wine very effectively against damaging micro-organisms, without affecting the taste, aroma or color of the drink. The LANXESS stabilizer is added to the finished beverage directly before filling. It immediately performs its disinfectant function and then degrades into tiny amounts of methanol and carbon dioxide, which are natural components of fruit juices and fruit juice-based drinks.

The Material Protection Products business unit, one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of biocidal active ingredients and formulations for wood protection, industrial applications, disinfection and preservation, is part of the Performance Chemicals segment. This segment achieved sales of EUR 1.977 billion in fiscal 2005.

Sales cooperation with Symrise for Velcorin®

LANXESS expands activities in the US beverage sector

Leverkusen - The American companies LANXESS Corporation, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Symrise, Inc. in Teterboro, New Jersey have signed an agreement on the marketing of Velcorin®. Effective immediately, Symrise is to take on marketing and sales activities and technical support for the LANXESS stabilizer in America. Velcorin® provides effective protection against harmful microorganisms for non-alcoholic beverages and wine without affecting the taste, odor or color of the drink.

The US subsidiary of Symrise GmbH & Co. KG, Holzminden, Germany will be responsible for the sales and marketing of the dimethyl dicarbonate in 32 US states. The product itself is manufactured by LANXESS's Material Protection Products (MPP) business unit at its sites in Dormagen and Uerdingen, Germany. "We are very excited about our cooperation with Symrise," remarks Ingo Broda, head of the Business Line Beverage Technologies at MPP. "As one of the leading manufacturers of flavor products, Symrise has an excellent reputation in the beverage industry in terms of portfolio, product development and service. The sales cooperation established in the United States is a further important step in intensifying our customer relationships and ensuring the consistent implementation of our overall strategy."

"We will use our excellent contacts with customers in the US beverage industry, specifically in the soft drinks, mineral water and fruit juices sectors, to further expand the Velcorin® share of a very promising market," comments Wilhelm Resanovic, head of Application Technology Business (ATB) at Symrise. "The United States offers extremely high market potential for the LANXESS product, since dimethyl dicarbonate can be used to replace or supplement traditional preservatives. It does not have to be identified on product labeling, nor does it affect the sensorial properties of beverages," explains Resanovic.

Velcorin® is added to the finished beverage directly before filling. It immediately performs its disinfectant function and then degrades into tiny amounts of methanol and carbon dioxide - which are natural components of fruit juices and fruit-juice-based beverages. The beverage no longer contains the stabilizer by the time it reaches the consumer. The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Joint Expert Committee for Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization (WHO) gave a positive assessment to the use of dimethyl dicarbonate for beverage stabilization.

Symrise is a global supplier of fragrances and flavorings, cosmetic raw materials and active ingredients for the perfume, cosmetics and foodstuffs industries. With sales of EUR 1.15 billion in 2005, the company is one of the top 4 in the global fragrances and flavors market. The group, based in Holzminden, operates a total of 25 sites across Europe, the United States, the Asia-Pacific region, and South America.

LANXESS is an international chemical company employing around 17,200 people. Sales in fiscal 2005 amounted to EUR 7.15 billion. The group offers a comprehensive portfolio of basic, specialty and fine chemicals and polymers. The Material Protection Products business unit is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of biocide agents and formulations for wood protection, industrial applications, disinfection and preservatives.

Preventol® P for paints with the "Blue Angel" label

Environmentally sound preservation of interior wall paint:

Leverkusen - The LANXESS Preventol® P line of products has been approved for the in-can preservation of paints in accordance with the RAL-UZ 102 "Blue Angel" label. Following the listing of the active substance bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol) in late 2005 by the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA - Umweltbundesamt) and the German Institute for Quality Assurance and Labeling (RAL), specific mixtures of bronopol with the active substance isothiazolinone have now also been approved. Bronopol is marketed by LANXESS under the brand name "Preventol® P100."

The "Blue Angel" environmental label designates low-emission wall and ceiling paints primarily for interior use. It applies to emulsion paints as per DIN EN 971-1, as well as to silicate paints and emulsion silicate paints as per DIN 18363. Now, LANXESS has not only the key active substance benzisothiazolinone for in-can preservation, but also an extensive range of bronopol products certified to RAL-UZ 102. With this variety, the company can respond flexibly to changing market conditions, environmental regulations and legal requirements.

"The Blue Angel gives paint manufacturers and retailers an opportunity to clearly, simply and credibly label low-emission, environmentally friendly products. By using this widely recognized environmental label, businesses can significantly and lastingly enhance the competitive potential of their products," states Andreas Franitza, head of Industrial Preservation in the Material Protection Products business unit.

To comply with the requirements of RAL-UZ 102, paint manufacturers may only use registered active substances as in-can preservatives. To get an active substance listed, extensive studies of its toxicology, ecotoxicology and emission behavior must be submitted for evaluation to the UBA. Mixtures of the listed active substances must also be tested and evaluated before receiving registration. The Material Protection Products business unit conducted these studies in close cooperation with the UBA. After a successful review, LANXESS received confirmation from the UBA and RAL that Preventol® P 100 is permitted for use as an in-can preservative even up to a concentration of 200 ppm.

The Material Protection Products business unit, one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of biocidal active ingredients and formulations for wood protection, disinfection and industrial applications, is part of the Performance Chemicals segment, which achieved sales of EUR 1,977 billion in fiscal 2005

Production capacity for beverage stabilizer considerably increased

LANXESS inaugurates second Velcorin® plant

LANXESS Deutschland GmbH has set up a second plant for the manufacture of Velcorin® (dimethyl dicarbonate), at its Dormagen site. After a construction period of one year, operations began at the production and filling facility at the end of 2005. Regular production has now commenced after completion of the test phase. At the launch ceremony on March 31, 2006, Peter Weinmar, head of the Material Protection Products (MPP) business unit, said: "Thanks to the investment of eight-figure sums we have added a second pillar to the manufacture of our beverage stabilizer, which we have previously only been producing at the Uerdingen site. This also acknowledges the increasing international demand for our technology for stabilizing non-alcoholic beverages and wine."

Ingo Broda, head of the beverages industry business line at MPP, added: "The second plant also fulfills the wish of our customers - particularly from North America and Western Europe - to safeguard our ability to deliver."

Beverages such as spritzers and soda containing fruit juice, flavored water, ice tea and wine that are produced using natural ingredients can easily spoil as a result of spores, bacteria, yeasts or mold fungi. These microorganisms also impair the flavor, aroma or color of the liquids. Protecting soft beverages and wine from the effects of harmful microbes therefore plays a key role in safeguarding quality and is at the same time a form of preventive consumer protection.

Velcorin® is added to the finished beverage directly before filling. It immediately performs its  function in eliminating typical beverage - spoiling germs and then degrades into tiny amounts of methanol and carbon dioxide - which are natural components of fruit juices and fruit-juice-based beverages. The beverage no longer contains the stabilizer by the time it reaches the consumer. The assessments of the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Joint Expert Committee for Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization (WHO) have deemed  Velcorin® as safe.

Velcorin® is licensed in a wide range of countries around the world and has been successfully used in many beverages since its market launch. "A targeted registration and licensing strategy has enabled or will enable us to access new markets in Asia and Latin America in the near term- where we see further excellent opportunities for growth as a result of demand and market development," said Ingo Broda.

The Material Protection Products business unit, one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of biocidal active ingredients and formulations for wood protection, industrial applications, disinfection and preservation, is part of the Performance Chemicals segment. This sector achieved sales of EUR 1,980 billion in fiscal 2005.

Disinfectant Preventol® CD 601 highly effective against Avian Flu Virus

A stringent hygiene program deploying the best-possible disinfectants can contribute to keep the disease at bay.

Since the Avian bird flu virus has reached several European countries including Germany the danger of a worldwide outbreak - a pandemic* - is drawing close. First cases of a transmigration of the virus to humans have been reported from Asia, causing growing demand for actions against a possible pandemic.

Action should start where the disease is caused - mainly in places where poultry is bred and kept in large numbers: the highly infectious virus primarily attacks chickens, ducks and other birds. They develop a fever, respiratory problems, and diarrhea. They then disperse the virus through feces and body fluids enabling it to spread not only by contact with migrating birds, but also to vehicles and humans.

"We are all responsible," said Axel Horst from Leverkusen, chartered expert at the Rhineland Agricultural Chamber for Poultry Breeding and Keeping. He stressed that "only a stringent hygiene program with the targeted deployment of suitably effective disinfectants is an adequate response to this threat. Every breeder and keeper of poultry must be absolutely confident to have done everything possible." He therefore advises, in addition to other necessary actions, thorough cleaning and disinfection procedures at poultry farms: "All areas, equipment, vehicles and pens should be treated with disinfectant capable of destroying all bacteria, germs and viruses. In particular any areas where the virus has been found must be disinfected before new animals may be introduced."

Preventol® CD 601 contains a unique combination of three agents and is particularly suitable for areas with significant organic contamination such as poultry pens and as a weapon against so-called 'encapsulated' viruses such as the Asian bird flu virus H5N1. The formula has a broad range of efficiency against bacteria, fungi and viruses. "Germs, bacteria and viruses can be destroyed even in areas with very high contamination. This is the best way to deal with the difficult hygiene conditions in breeding environments," Dietmar Schlegel from MPP Marketing Disinfection explained.

The latest results from tests carried out with influenza A viruses by the Institute for Veterinary Research at Gießen University prove the efficiency of this product developed by LANXESS Research & Development and used for years to disinfect animal farming environments.

* A pandemic is the international, or even worldwide, spread of a disease and not, as opposed to an epidemic, limited to one region. This means that a pandemic can affect the entire world population, crossing national borders and moving between continents.
