On reflection - 12 years of MPP / Change at the top of Material Protection

On March 1, Ulrich Beck, head of the Material Protection Products Business Unit (MPP), will go into well-earned retirement. He reflects on his eventful working life with MPP.

Born in Krefeld, Germany, Beck joined Bayer in 1974. He initially held various posts in Applications Technology and Marketing, and also spent several months abroad in Italy, Japan and the United States. Then came a number of managerial positions in various segments. Twelve years ago, Beck (now 61), who has a doctorate in physics, became manager of the Material Protection Products Business Unit within the Organic Chemicals Business Group. His staff describe his style of leadership as fair, frank and very caring, and Beck himself as honourable and a man of the world. "Ulrich Beck has always encouraged contact with his staff and treated them all equally well. He is always ready to listen even if he has a pile of work to do," says Ingo Broda, a member of his staff. He says Beck has always been someone to look up to, someone who sets an example, especially in terms of work performance.

He will be succeeded by Peter Weinmar, head of the Ion Exchange Resins (ION) Business Unit, also effective March 1, 2005. Weinmar, who is 43 years old, completed a Business & Administration Trainee Program shortly after joining Bayer in 1981. After working in the Inorganic Specialties field service in France, as a product manager for Liquid Silicone Rubber and as a marketing manager for Phosphorous Chemicals & Hydrazine Hydrate, he was transferred to Strategic Plan
ning at Bayer AG. He became head of the Ion Exchange Resins Business Unit in 2000.

Ulrich Beck reminisces on his time with MPP:

"When I was appointed head of the Material Protection Products Business Unit in 1993, it was a job that attracted me immediately, although at that time I never imagined I would remain in that position for so long. It is certainly unusual to spend twelve years as head of the same section. But this continuity had many positive aspects both for the team and for our customers. For this to happen, it is, of course, essential that our dealings are reliable and fair, and that the decision-making procedures are transparent.

I have always endeavoured to meet these standards, and I believe that this has played a major role in boosting MPP's business. I could quote many examples, particularly in Japan, in which continuity and persistence in preparing the ground for a business deal have yielded richer and richer harvests, year after year. However, none of this would have been possible without the active support of my MPP team throughout the world. For me, all the groups within MPP and the related departments play an equally important role in this.

In the past twelve years, the business unit has also experienced a number of organisational changes. After being part of the Organic Chemicals Business Group (OC) it then moved to the Specialty Products Business Group (SP). These two units were subsequently amalgamated to create the Bayer Chemicals Business Group. Last year, we experienced the most significant reorganisation of all with the birth of LANXESS. I viewed all these changes as very positive. In particular, because the business units have now been given full responsibility, also for production. At LANXESS, the remit has even been extended to include global responsibility for human resources. Every business unit is now an independent company unit, which, at the same time, is part of a worldwide group and, as such, shares responsibility for its overall targets.

But there have also been a large number of organisational changes within the business unit itself. One example is the enlargement of the "registration group" (TS-HSEQ-Regulatory Affairs) and the establishment of the Regional Centers since 1999. Under LANXESS, the global sales organisation has already been improved after only a very brief period. In addition, we have been able to drive many customer-related projects in our marketing activities. Last but not least, we have made some investments in production and completed two product acquisitions. The aim of all these measures has been to get the business unit fit to face the modern-day requirements of our highly competitive environment.

Thus the past twelve years have always been forward-looking, with our sights set clearly on our target of "growth and profitability". During this time, we have achieved a great deal for MPP's business development. I also see good prospects for our business unit, in particular because of our vast technological know-how and because we have strengthened our global registration activities. Nevertheless, there is no denying that a great deal of expansion and reshaping work is needed to further improve the medium- and long-term future of MPP.

May I wish the entire MPP team and my successor, Peter Weinmar, every success in these endeavors!

Ulrich Beck

MPP Research begins R&D cooperation with Indian research institute

On January 1, 2005 MPP's Research Department entered into a cooperation agreement with the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in Pune, India.

The cooperation is initially limited to two years and involves NCL producing a specified number of potentially biocidal structures and then sending them to the MPP laboratories in Germany where their efficacy will be tested. MPP-R&D will stipulate which structures should be synthesized by NCL. At NCL a PhD scientist will work exclusively for MPP. Patent and other rights regarding the structures lie with MPP.

As Johannes Kaulen, Head of R&D at LANXESS MPP, explains, "This cooperation arises out of our strategy to outsource basic research and to focus our limited resources on further developing those products which show initial promise. Another argument in favor of this cooperation was the fact that at LANXESS we are looking to expand our presence in Asia and also want to exploit the research potential that exists there."

A similar cooperation agreement has existed with a research company in Bitterfeld for some years, and has been a success.

NCL, which is based in Pune, India, is a leading Indian research institute and part of the State Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. It has considerable know-how, including in active ingredient chemistry and sophisticated natural product chemistry, and cooperates with numerous well known companies from India and beyond. NCL has some 1,600 employees, of whom around 300 are PhD scientists and 400 are studying for a doctorate.
